Supertramp's 'Live In Paris ‘79' Coming To Vinyl & CD

In 1979, Supertramp became one of the biggest bands in the world, following the release and extensive accompanying tour for their biggest album Breakfast In America. The complete set at the 8,000-seat Pavillon de Paris in December of that year, on the third of four sold-out nights, will be released as Live In Paris ‘79 on 3LP and 2CD.

Recorded on December 1 and 2, 1979, the classic lineup of members Rick Davies (singer-songwriter-keyboardist) and Roger Hodgson (singer-songwriter-guitarist-keyboardist) with John Helliwell on sax, woodwinds, vocals and keyboards and a rock-steady rhythm section of bassist Dougie Thomson and drummer Bob Siebenberg capturing Supertramp performing at the peak of their career.

Unlike the previously released 1980 Paris live album, featuring selections from earlier shows of this Paris run, the triple LP and double CD features the complete Supertramp show from the tour, compiled from recordings during the two December shows.

Having been on the road for almost ten months throughout America, Canada and Europe in support of Breakfast in America, 1979's top selling album, which sold in excess of 20 million copies, producing several hit singles and went on to win two Grammy awards. For a London based band that started in 1969 and, with a new line-up, reached stardom in 1974 with the release of its third album Crime of the Century and within five years to have now reached the very pinnacle of music success, it must have felt sweet.

Performing such Supertramp favorites as “Bloody Well Right,” “The Logical Song,” “Breakfast In America,” “Goodbye Stranger,” “Asylum,” “Even In The Quietest Moments,” “Give A Little Bit,” “Dreamer,” “Rudy,” “Take The Long Way Home,” “Fool’s Overture” and others amounted to nothing short of a celebration.

Siebenberg recalls, “looking back at that period, it really was the experience of a lifetime…the best of times.”

Saxophonist Helliwell notes “those Paris shows were a definite high point for us because you could feel the audience reaction. You can actually hear the volatility in the French crowd. They sound a little mad!”

Pre-order Close To The Edge (Super Deluxe Edition)

The rarities disc features rough mixes, alternate versions, and edits of staple tracks from Close to the Edge, offering another perspective on this opus. Three previously unreleased Steven Wilson tracks— “Siberian Khatru,” “Cord of Life,” and “Total Mass Retain ”— grace this collection. Meanwhile, the Live at the Rainbow, London, England, 12/16/72 recording spans two discs and captures the group in their prime while on tour supporting the album.

Setting the stage is a liver version of "Siberian Khatru" from 12/16/72)," serving as a prelude to the Super Deluxe Edition. Have a listen below.

The collection boasts liner notes penned by Syd Schwartz of Jazz & Coffee as he dives into the process and story behind the seminal Close to the Edge, reflecting the spirit at the heart of “the ultimate Yes album.” Guitarist Steve Howe shares that “Close To The Edge is Yes's most miraculous album; it has our first 20-minute epic, the template for many large-scale tracks that followed, accompanied by two ten-minute tracks, similarly recorded with the highest musical and technical integrity. Recording Fragile was an experience that enabled us to make Close To The Edge Yes's career-defining album.”

Steve Howe [guitarist], Jon Anderson [lead vocals], Chris Squire [bass], Rick Wakeman [keys, piano, organ], and Bill Bruford [drums, percussion] entered Advision in London in June 1972 to bring Close To The Edge to life alongside trusted cohort and longtime producer Eddy Offord. Together, they conjured magic with the likes of the multi-part progressive suites “Close to the Edge” and “And You and I” as well as “Siberian Khatru.” The record first landed on September 8, 1972, and vaulted into the Top 3 of the Billboard 200, going RIAA platinum.

Ian Anderson had been saying for months following the release of RökFlöte that he would embark on a new project in late 2023. He waited only a few weeks before the first notions began to solidify into some drafted words of intent and in May 2024, some unfinished music recorded earlier with John O'Hara, David Goodier and James Duncan became the starting point for the new songs as they took shape.

Writing the lyrics and melodies for all the newly written material came very quickly once he began in earnest during June and just seemed to slot right in to the musical feel and styles of the earlier recordings.

Anderson's writing here is often on a more personal level of lyric content than we are used to hearing. Interspersed with his usual observational descriptions are the slightly more heart-on-sleeve moments of soul-baring – albeit not on the topics more often paraded by the usual I-me lyric merchants of pop and rock.

Some of the songs are developed from unfinished instrumental demos made some years ago although this does not result in a huge stylistic divide to jump out at the listener. Apart from the signature flute solos and melodies, accordion, mandolin, acoustic and tenor guitars feature on several tracks too, so the subtle backdrop of acoustic and folk rock serves to remind of the Tull heritage of the 70s.

Rock And Roll Gallery Celebrates 25 Years With Photographer Neal Preston Interview

Rock And Roll Gallery is celebrating its 25th anniversary by featuring an exclusive interview with photographer Neal Preston on their “Shot Talk” YouTube channel, Preston dives into his remarkable career, from his early days in New York to becoming the official photographer for Led Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac, Queen, Bruce Springsteen, and many others. You can watch the interview below.

Titled “A Portrait of Neal Preston,” this 40-minute-plus interview offers fans and photography enthusiasts an unprecedented look behind the scenes of rock’s most iconic moments. Preston shares never-before-heard anecdotes, insights into his creative process, and reflections on the evolution of music photography. Viewers will also be treated to never-before-seen images that highlight the electrifying energy of some of the greatest superstars in rock history.

Throughout his illustrious career, Preston has had unparalleled access to the biggest names in music, capturing everything from intimate backstage moments to legendary live performances. His images have come to define rock and roll itself, and now, through this exclusive interview, fans can hear firsthand about his journey.

"We are honored to present this exclusive interview with Neal Preston, whose work has immortalized some of the most defining moments in music history," said Chris Vranian, founder of Rock and Roll Gallery. "Via his engaging storytelling, this interview reveals the incredible depth of Preston’s career, from the 70s heyday to today."

Recalls Preston about how he got to work with Led Zeppelin in 1975: “I was asked, do you still want that job with Led Zeppelin, I said yeah, and he (Danny Goldberg) said ‘get ready to go to Chicago!’ The Rolling Stones got all the press…meanwhile Led Zeppelin is eating The Rolling Stones for lunch every day…saw them both in 75 and Rolling Stones were nothing compared to Led Zeppelin.”

How to be a photographer on the road? “There was no instruction manual on how to deal with this job,” explains Preston. “Don’t act like you’re in the band because you are not. If you act like you’re in the band, the thing slipped under your door is a one-way ticket home—it ain’t going to be the room list for tomorrow.”

Looking back at his work with Queen—especially their 1985 “Live Aid” performance—Preston says: “I’m up there with Queen…and I didn’t know it was going to be the most famous 25-minute gig in history!” He adds: “Freddie Mercury’s favorite thing in the world was being Freddie Mercury!”

Rock and Roll Gallery is a one-stop online photographic wonderland for classic rock lovers, offering a treasure trove of iconic images and limited-edition prints. With the tagline “What Music Looked Like,” Rock and Roll Gallery brings together the best in music and photography, providing a visual celebration of rock’s history. Vranian calls it a place where “the History Channel meets the Biography Channel at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.”

Rock and Roll Gallery has also announced a contest in which one lucky entrant will win an 11 x 14 Neal Preston Queen print valued at $800.00. By “liking” and subscribing to the “Shot Talk” YouTube channel, participants can enter the contest and indicate in the comments section what their favorite Preston photo is and why. Neal will choose the winner based on what he thinks is the best response. The winner will be picked next month, on February 14, and will be notified by email from “Shot Talk.”
