In the performer category, Ozzy Osbourne, Foreigner, Peter Frampton, Cher, Dave Matthews Band, Kool & the Gang, A Tribe Called Quest, and Mary J. Blige will be inducted.
Alexis Korner, John Mayall and the late Big Mama Thornton will receive the musical influence award, while the late Jimmy Buffett, MC5, Dionne Warwick and the late Norman Whitfield will receive the musical excellence award. Suzanne de Passe will receive the Ahmet Ertegun award.
In order to be eligible for a nomination, the artist must have released their first commercial recording 25 or more years ago, or by 1999, per the foundation.
The 2024 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony will air live on October 19 at the Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse in Cleveland, Ohio. For the second year, the ceremony will stream live on Disney+, air as a special on ABC at a later date and be available to stream on Hulu the day after the telecast.
Ozzy Osbourne tweeted his reaction to being inducted for a second time (the first was with Black Sabbath): "Thank You @RockHall Voters & Fans for this induction. My solo career, has been a much larger part of my overall music career as a whole, so this feels more special. Not bad for a guy who was fired from his last band."
Frampton told Billboard during a phone call: “I think I’m a little bit in shock, and speechless. I never expected this. People always said, ‘You should be in.’ I said, ‘Eh, what is to be,’ y’know? So mixed emotions, because it’s something that I just never expected, whereas other people did for me. (laughs) It’s wonderful."
In a press statement, Foreigner's Mick Jones said, “I was thrilled to learn of Foreigner’s nomination, and this confirmation of our coming membership in the home of my peers is a priceless highlight of my career. October 19th will be an emotional day for me, Lou, Al, Dennis, and Rick, and a very special moment for the families of Ian and Ed. The leadership of Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Chairman, John Sykes, and Nominating Committee Chairman, Rick Krim, has brought a new era of inclusivity and relevance that reflects all that the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame should be, and we are proud to become a part of it. Long may it continue.”
Sykes said in a separate statement: "Rock & Roll is an ever-evolving amalgam of sounds that impacts culture and moves generations. The diverse group of inductees each broke down musical barriers and influenced countless artists that followed in their footsteps."
